An Emotional Ellen DeGeneres FaceTimed Neighbor Oprah From Montecito, Showed "Devastating" Mudslide Aftermath

So heartbreaking — but there's strength in friendship.

Oprah Winfrey is still in Montecito following the area's third brush with Mother Nature's fierce wrath in an achingly short timeframe. First there were record-breaking fires, then rain and flooding, and now the tight-knit California community is reeling from mudslides that further ravaged their homes.

On Tuesday, Ellen Degeneres and her wife Portia de Rossi evacuated their nearby property, but Ellen show viewers were able to watch Oprah and Ellen FaceTime after the California mudslides on Wednesday to see just how "devastating" the damage actually is.

Prior to hopping on the phone with Oprah, Ellen, visibly upset during the show, told her audience: "After everything we’ve been through I think a lot of people thought they were just being overly cautious, but exactly what they feared happened. The rain triggered massive mudslides. Massive."

Once on the line with her Golden Globe-winning neighbor, Ellen and her audience got a tour of the heartbreaking scene. Oprah, who shared updates to her personal Instagram on Wednesday as well, told Ellen:

"Where I am now, which is the east side of my property, I was walking down here and all of my neighbors’ homes are gutted. I’m standing right now still in a lot of mud but not as much as yesterday. I walked out back, you know, where we share a fence line and the neighbors out back they’re houses are gone. It’s as devastating as can be."

Members of the Ventura County Fire Department happened to be in the area, too, and Oprah gave them some camera time to update all of us on the status of their rescue mission.

Though they were unclear of the exact number of fatalities at the time, it has been confirmed that 17 people have perished as a result of the mudslides.

In similar fashion to her awe-inspiring speech at the 2018 Golden Globe Awards, Oprah ended the FaceTime encouraging words:

"But we’re going to do what we do. We’re going to come together and we’re going to do what great Americans do all the time. We’re going to help each other. We’re going to help each other out wherever needed."
