Here's Why Scheana Shay Didn't Go Back to Using the Name Scheana Marie After Her Divorce

The Vanderpump Rules SURver opens up about the past, present, and future of her love life.

It's been more than a year since Scheana Shay announced her separation from husband Mike Shay after two years of marriage, and the Vanderpump Rules SURver has definitely moved on from this difficult time, living life to the fullest and having an on-again, off-again relationship with Rob Valletta. However, Scheana still always has a part of her marriage with her in the form of keeping the last name Shay.

Scheana legally changed her last name to Shay after she got married on July 27, 2014. She explained to The Daily Dish earlier this season why she decided to stick with the name Scheana Shay even after her divorce was finalized in the spring of 2017 in the video, above.

However, you won't be seeing Shay in Scheana's name if she ever gets married again. "When and if I get remarried, I would absolutely take my new husband's last name," she told The Daily Dish. "I would never keep an ex's last name while married to someone else."

In fact, Scheana is still optimistic about one day taking the last name Valletta, even though she and Rob decided to take a break this fall. "Yeah, we talk about the future all the time. It's kind of a joke for us now because it's been like 11, 12 years, and we still can't figure it out. It's like, 'Oh, bad timing yet again,'" Scheana said of possibly resuming her relationship with Rob in the future. "I'm like, this is gonna be one hell of a story for the grandkids. 'Grandma and Grandpa couldn't figure it out for 15 years.' But I mean, that's just part of our story. This is just another chapter. And who knows what next year has in store for us? But we're optimistic that one day we'll figure it out."

Of course, Scheana and Rob may still seem like a couple to some, especially since they continue to appear at events together following their split. "As much as my life is public, that's honestly no one's business. Our private relationship and what we do behind closed doors is up to us. If we want to show up at a red carpet together, we don't have to be boyfriend and girlfriend," Scheana explained. "But people are like, 'Wait, you're together because you went to an event?' No, we can still do things together."

Rob reflected on the end of his romantic relationship with Scheana before he made his debut on Vanderpump Rules this season in early December. "12 years ago, I began to develop a relationship. It is one that has lead @scheana and I through so many different stages: friends, crazy kids, boyfriend and girlfriend, co-hosts, beer pong champions, charger fans ... charger haters ... and then supporters. Throughout all those varying phases, and over the course of 12 years, one thing has never changed - we have always been able to make each other smile. Now, most people will try and define a relationship with a label. I define a relationship as the connection you build with someone over time, based on three simple factors: love, respect and kindness," he captioned a photo of himself and Scheana on Instagram. "I have no idea what the future looks like, but i know even as friends we will always support each other and I’m excited to see what life has In store next."

Tonight, you have an opportunity to see one chapter of our story. It was truly a very unique opportunity and, if one thing is certain, it's that I have a lot more respect for Scheana because of it. It takes a lot of courage to allow people to see inside your world, and she handles it so well. I can’t express enough how proud I am of her every day because of how she handles herself. I learned one very important thing going through this process - you never have to explain yourself to others if you realize they can only see you through their own perception or idea that they have created of you. Always be yourself and own it, because that's where you will find yourself smiling the most. I have no idea what the future looks like, but i know even as friends we will always support each other and I’m excited to see what life has In store next.

Scheana told The Daily Dish that she didn't agree with everything that Rob wrote in that Instagram post. "Him and I don't completely see eye-to-eye on where we are. He's just totally cool being friends, but then it is confusing sometimes. It feels like we're still dating, but we're not," she shared. "I don't know. I mean, we're trying to figure it out. But it's really no one's f---ing business."

Scheana admitted that navigating this space of remaining friendly with an ex has been challenging when it comes to both Shay and Rob. "I've never stayed friends with an ex. That's why this whole thing with Rob and I is so weird because it kind of feels like we're still dating. Like, we're not friends, so it's like friends with benefits," she said. "So I'm still trying to figure out how to do that. Some days are easy, some days I cry myself to sleep."

For now, Scheana said she's not ready to start a relationship with someone new just yet or even get back into the dating game. "I'm honestly so not interested in dating right now. Like, you will not see me on Raya, Tinder, Bumble, Match, any of those," she said. "If I meet someone the old-fashioned way, that's how I would want to meet someone, but I'm just focused on myself right now. I haven't done that in a long time. The last seven, eight years of my life, I've been in a relationship. So I mean, if someone wants to take me to dinner, maybe I say yes, maybe I don't, but I'm not even looking for that right now."

Scheana previously opened up to The Daily Dish about where things stand with Shay these days. Find out if the former spouses keep in touch, below.
